Tesla to Wind Down Cybertruck Production in Mid-2027

Tesla will begin winding down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027, CEO Elon Musk said on X on November 6. He said the change will make room for more Cybercab robotaxi production.

Musk did not say whether production will end entirely or move elsewhere.

Sales Fell Far Short of the Plan

The Cybertruck never came close to Tesla's early expectations.

Tesla delivered 8,295 vehicles in its "Other Models" category in the third quarter, down 48% from a year earlier. Electrek estimates that 7,000 to 8,000 of those were Cybertrucks.

US sales have also dropped. Cox Automotive's Kelley Blue Book estimates show 38,965 in 2024 and 20,237 in 2025. About 11,586 were sold in the first nine months of 2026, down 28% from a year earlier.

The truck's reach was limited too. It was never sold in most of Europe or most right-hand-drive markets, and Tesla canceled it for Australia and New Zealand in October. TechCrunch also noted that Musk's political role made the truck a target for protesters.

Tesla Shifts Toward Robotaxis and AI

Tesla is reorganizing around autonomy and robotics. It has spent two months putting Cybercabs on the road in Austin and plans to expand to Dallas later this month, TechCrunch reported.

The Cybertruck would be the third product dropped in that shift, after the Model S and Model X. Tesla moved the factory space for those vehicles to Optimus humanoid robots.

Not everyone accepts the space explanation. Electrek argued that Giga Texas has plenty of room and that weak demand is the real reason. It said the Cybertruck line runs at about a quarter of its installed capacity, while Texas had only 463 registered Cybercabs in late October.

What It Means for Owners

Current owners should still be able to get support. Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill said Tesla will maintain spare parts and service, Tesla North reported. Musk also said the fleet will be around for a long time.

Key questions remain open. Tesla has not given an exact end date, a plan for existing orders, or a timeline for selling remaining inventory.
