Election Day 2026: How Late Are Polls Open?

Polls close at different times across the country

Polling hours on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, are set by each state, so how late you can vote depends on where you live. Most polling places close between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time.

The first polls close at 6 p.m. ET in the eastern parts of Indiana and Kentucky. The last close at 1 a.m. ET Wednesday in western Alaska. New York has some of the latest hours on the East Coast, with polls open until 9 p.m. local time.

The most important rule: if you are in line when your polling place closes, you have the right to stay in line and vote.

When polls close, state by state

The table below shows the latest closing time in each state, converted to Eastern time. In states that span two time zones, some polls close an hour earlier.

What to know before you head out

  • Stay in line. If you're in line by closing time, you can still vote, no matter how long the wait.

  • Hours can vary locally. In New Hampshire, Tennessee, North Dakota and parts of Maine and Vermont, opening or closing times are set by the town or county. Some small towns may even close once every registered voter has voted.

  • Watch the time zone. Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska each span two time zones, so check your local time, not the state's main one.

  • Mostly mail states still have in-person options. California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington and D.C. send ballots to voters, but in-person voting centers and drop boxes are usually open until polls close.

  • Confirm with your state. Your state or county election website has the official hours and your polling place.

More than 57 million Americans had already voted early before Election Day, according to CBS News. Results will start coming in as each state's polls close.
